NEW DELHI – Campbell Wilson, the Chief Executive Officer of Air India, has reportedly resigned from his post, marking a sudden end to his leadership of the national carrier under the Tata Group.
While neither Air India nor the parent conglomerate, Tata Group, has issued a formal confirmation, multiple reports from the Press Trust of India (PTI) and local media outlets on Tuesday indicate that Wilson submitted his resignation well ahead of the conclusion of his five-year term.
A Tenure Defined by Transformation and Tragedy
The New Zealand-born executive took the helm in 2022, following the high-profile privatization of the airline. His mandate was to lead a multi-year turnaround strategy to modernize the fleet, enhance service standards, and integrate various business units.
However, Wilson's tenure was heavily shadowed by the catastrophic crash of Air India Flight 171 in June 2025. The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after departing from Ahmedabad, resulting in the loss of 242 passengers and crew, as well as 19 people on the ground. The accident remains one of the most significant setbacks in the airline's recent history and has triggered intense regulatory scrutiny.
