In a move set to transform the regional logistics landscape, Dubai-based aviation giant dnata has announced a A$32 million (Dh77 million) investment to establish a state-of-the-art cargo terminal at the upcoming Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.
The investment marks a significant vote of confidence in the region, positioning the airport as a critical gateway for global trade months before its official opening to the public. This expansion follows recent trends in UAE aviation demand where efficiency and capacity are becoming paramount.
A 24-Hour Logistics Powerhouse
The purpose-built facility will be a cornerstone of the airport’s 24-hour Cargo Precinct. Unlike traditional airport infrastructure, the new terminal will benefit from round-the-clock operations, ensuring seamless movement for time-sensitive goods.
- Capacity: 60,000 tonnes of cargo annually.
- Footprint: A 5,000-square-metre warehouse on 9,000 square metres of total land.
- Infrastructure: A semi-motorised materials-handling system to streamline operations.
- Specialization: A$6 million dedicated to pharma-grade temperature control and high-tech handling equipment.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The project is more than just a terminal; it is an economic engine for Greater Western Sydney. In its initial phase, the facility is expected to create 50 direct, skilled roles, with further employment anticipated as cargo volumes scale up.

Boosting National Supply Chains
The dnata terminal will be part of a broader precinct designed to handle an initial 220,000 tonnes of freight per year. The site is engineered for efficiency, with the capacity to service up to eight wide-body aircraft simultaneously. July 2026 marks the scheduled commencement for freighter operations, followed by a full passenger launch late in the year.
With a current footprint across nine Australian airports and a yearly handling volume of 300,000 tonnes, dnata’s expansion into Western Sydney solidifies its role as a titan of the global aviation and logistics sector, further bridging the gap between GCC expertise and international markets.
