Etihad Airways Announces Massive China Expansion: 5 New Routes and 28 Weekly Flights

In one of its most significant capacity surges in recent years, Etihad Airways has announced a major expansion of its Chinese operations. The Abu Dhabi-based carrier will launch five new routes and add 28 weekly flights, bringing its total mainland China service to 35 flights per week across six key destinations.

The expansion, set to roll out between October 2026 and March 2027, solidifies the growing economic and diplomatic synergy between the UAE and China.

Connecting Abu Dhabi to China’s Economic Powerhouses

The new services will connect Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) with a mix of established financial hubs and emerging technology centers, serviced by the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

The New Destinations:

  • Shanghai
  • Guangzhou
  • Chengdu
  • Hangzhou
  • Shenzhen

These cities join Etihad’s existing daily service to Beijing Daxing, creating a comprehensive network that covers China’s most vital manufacturing and financial corridors.

Strategic Partnership with China Eastern

The expansion is underpinned by Etihad’s joint venture with China Eastern Airlines, allowing for coordinated schedules, broader access to inland China, and increased economic prosperity for both nations.

A Boost for Global Trade and Cargo

Beyond passenger travel, the move is a massive win for the logistics sector. By increasing flight frequencies, Etihad significantly boosts its cargo capacity. Through partnerships with SF Airlines, the carrier is positioned to streamline the movement of high-value goods like electronics across one of the world’s busiest trade lanes.

Timeline for Growth

The phased rollout is expected to begin in Q4 2026, with the full schedule active by the end of Q1 2027. China remains a strategically important market and a key pillar of Etihad’s long-term network growth strategy.
