UAE Energy Investment: Dh160 Billion Committed Over Five Years

ABU DHABI — In a landmark announcement marking Earth Day 2026, the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has unveiled an ambitious investment plan to channel Dh160 billion into the UAE's energy and water sectors over the next five years.

This massive capital injection is designed to accelerate the nation’s transition toward a sustainable, technology-driven economy while ensuring a reliable supply for a growing population. It builds on the $2.2 billion renewables platform announced earlier this month.

A Shift in the Energy Mix

Abu Dhabi has already made significant strides in diversifying its power sources. According to Dr. Abdulla Humaid Al Jarwan, Chairman of the DoE, the emirate’s energy mix has reached a critical tipping point:

  • Current Status: Clean and renewable energy sources now exceed 45% of the total mix.
  • The Goal: A clear roadmap is in place to reach 60% within the coming years.
  • Solar Expansion: The transition is anchored by the addition of more than three gigawatts of solar capacity annually.

"Resource sustainability is no longer a parallel track to development, but an integral component in the design of modern economic and operational systems," said Dr. Al Jarwan.

Empowering the Residential Sector: Solar Self-Supply

One of the most significant shifts in policy is the move toward decentralized energy. The DoE is enabling residents to become active participants in the energy transition through:

  • Solar Self-Supply Policy: A new regulatory framework allowing the residential sector to produce their own power, reducing pressure on the national grid.
  • AI Integration: The expansion of Artificial Intelligence applications to optimize energy consumption and enhance system resilience.
  • Efficient Appliances: Initiatives launched earlier this year to promote the use of high-efficiency water and power technologies in homes.

Efficiency Targets for 2030

Beyond generation, the DoE is heavily focused on demand-side management. The department has set rigorous efficiency targets to be met by 2030:

Resource Target Reduction by 2030
Electricity Consumption 22%
Water Consumption 32%

These targets are supported by investments in battery energy storage solutions and advanced infrastructure to maintain grid stability as more intermittent renewable sources come online.

The Path to Net Zero 2050

This Dh160 billion investment serves as a cornerstone for the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 vision. By partnering with both local and international stakeholders, Abu Dhabi is positioning itself as a global model for practical, technology-driven solutions.

The transformation is not merely about meeting environmental quotas but about economic competitiveness. By building a system grounded in efficiency and innovation, the UAE ensures that its energy transition fuels long-term industrial growth and a higher quality of life for future generations.
