Skies Stay Shut: EASA Extends Middle East Flight Ban Through April 24

DUBAI – Europe’s top aviation safety regulator has dashed hopes for a quick resumption of regional air travel, extending its "no-fly" advisory for a massive swath of Middle Eastern airspace until April 24, 2026.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) announced Thursday that it is maintaining its Conflict Zone Information Bulletin (CZIB), citing a security environment that remains too volatile for civilian aircraft despite recent ceasefire talks.

A Region Under "Exclusion"

The advisory is far-reaching, instructing airlines to avoid the airspace of 11 countries at all altitudes. The move reflects fears that the sophisticated air defense systems and cruise missiles currently deployed in the region could misidentify or accidentally target commercial jetliners.

Affected Airspace Includes:

  • The Gulf: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman.
  • The Levant & Beyond: Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran.

While a narrow exception exists for specific high-altitude corridors in southern Saudi Arabia and Oman, EASA warned that the risk of military "spillover" remains the primary concern for EU-regulated carriers.

The Conflict’s Toll on Aviation

The current crisis was sparked by a series of military escalations on February 28, involving strikes by the U.S. and Israel inside Iran, followed by retaliatory strikes across the GCC. EASA’s assessment highlights several critical risks:

  • Misidentification: The danger of civilian planes being mistaken for military assets.
  • Interception Errors: Risks posed by active interception of missiles and drones.
  • Advanced Weaponry: The presence of all-altitude defense systems that can reach even the highest cruising levels of commercial jets.

Major Airlines Dig In for the Long Haul

While the EASA advisory currently runs through late April, major European carriers have already preemptively cancelled flights deep into the summer and autumn, suggesting they expect a slow return to normalcy.

  • Lufthansa (Dubai & Tel Aviv): Resumption target June 1, 2026
  • Lufthansa (Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Tehran): Resumption target October 24, 2026
  • Air France (Dubai, Riyadh, Beirut): Resumption target Early May 2026
  • British Airways (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Tel Aviv): Resumption target June (Flexible rebooking to Oct)

Traveler Advisory

Passengers currently booked on flights to or from the Middle East are urged to check their flight status immediately. Most European carriers are offering full refunds or flexible rebooking options through October 2026, as the industry waits for the security situation on the ground to match the diplomatic efforts in the air.

"Safety remains the top priority," a spokesperson for a major airline group stated. "Operations will only resume once conditions stabilize and insurance frameworks are restored."
