UAE Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka wins top global design award

ABU DHABI, UAE — The UAE Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka has been awarded the Gold iF Design Award 2026, one of the most coveted honors in the global design industry. Recognized in the Interior Architecture – Trade Fairs / Temporary Exhibitions category, the pavilion was selected for its exceptional fusion of traditional craftsmanship and futuristic vision.

Out of more than 11,000 global entries, the UAE Pavilion was among a select few to receive the Gold distinction, a benchmark of excellence in conceptual innovation and visitor experience.

'Earth to Ether': A Narrative Journey

Developed under the theme "Earth to Ether," the pavilion’s design represents the UAE’s trajectory as a continuous human journey. The exhibition, designed by the Earth to Ether Design Collective in partnership with Atelier Brückner, bridges the nation’s deep-rooted heritage with its pioneering ambitions in space, healthcare, and sustainable technology.

The visitor experience was lauded by the iF jury for its multisensory depth, guiding guests through immersive environments defined by shifting light, organic materials, and interactive storytelling.

Architectural Harmony: The Palm Rachis Canopy

The architectural centerpiece of the pavilion featured 90 palm rachis columns rising to a height of 16 meters. This structure formed a shaded canopy reminiscent of a traditional oasis, providing a sanctuary for gathering within the bustling Expo site.

The project highlighted a unique cross-cultural collaboration:

  • Cultural Fusion: Emirati building traditions were reinterpreted through advanced wood craftsmanship developed in dialogue with Japanese master artisans.
  • Material Innovation: The design utilized sustainable materials, including Datecrete and Dateform, which experiment with agricultural palm waste to create functional architectural elements.

Unprecedented Public Engagement

The UAE Pavilion concluded its six-month run at Expo 2025 Osaka as the event’s most visited national pavilion. Welcoming over five million visitors (including both in-person and virtual attendees), the space served as a primary platform for international dialogue.

His Excellency Shihab Alfaheem, UAE Ambassador to Japan and Commissioner General of the Pavilion, remarked that the award validates the pavilion’s mission to foster human connection. "From the outset, it was conceived as a place where people could encounter one another through architecture, material exploration, and shared experience," he stated.

A Growing List of International Accolades

The iF Design Gold Award adds to a significant collection of global honors received by the pavilion since the conclusion of the Expo in October 2025:

  • BIE Bronze Award: Recognized in the top three for Architecture and Landscape.
  • World Expo Awards: Honored for Best Staff and Sustainable Design.
  • German Design Award 2026: Secured Gold in the "Fair and Exhibition" category.
  • DFA Design for Asia Awards: Recognized for excellence in regional design impact.

As the UAE continues to champion sustainable innovation on the world stage, the success of the Osaka pavilion reinforces the country’s legacy of excellence in global expositions, bridging the gap between historical identity and a technology-driven future.
